Tangcu Wanzi (糖醋丸子)

Sweet and sour meatballs are a popular Chinese dish with a juicy texture and bright flavor. They cook quickly and are perfect for a family dinner.
Ingredients
- 450 g ground pork
- 1 pcs egg
- 2 tbsp breadcrumbs
- 5 tsp cornstarch
- 2 tbsp soy sauce
- 1 tsp sesame oil
- 0.5 tsp salt
- 0.5 tsp white pepper
- 0.25 tsp garlic powder
- 3 tbsp tomato ketchup
- 2 tbsp rice vinegar
- 2 tbsp sugar
- 2 tbsp water
- to taste sesame seeds

In a bowl, combine ground pork, egg, breadcrumbs, cornstarch, soy sauce, sesame oil, salt, white pepper, and garlic powder. Mix thoroughly until homogeneous.

Divide the mixture into 20–22 portion-sized balls (about 1 tablespoon each) and shape into meatballs.

Preheat the oven to 180 °C (or 160 °C with convection).

Place the meatballs on a parchment-lined baking sheet and bake for about 12 minutes, until golden.

In a bowl, combine tomato ketchup, rice vinegar, sugar, soy sauce, cornstarch, white pepper, and water. Mix until a smooth homogeneous mixture.

Transfer the sauce to a pan, cook over low heat, stirring constantly until it thickens. Then add the baked meatballs and heat them in the sauce for a few minutes.

Remove from heat, toss the meatballs with the sauce, and optionally garnish with toasted sesame seeds.
